I'm a language enthusiast, always looking for new places to explore. That's why I have started this blog, to share my adventures and findings with you. With increased interest in learning Korean over the last decade or so, it has become easier to find options available for those who want to study the language free of charge. In this post, I will provide a list of websites which offer no or low-cost materials that can be used for self-study purposes. However, before we get into the list, a little background on Korean first: Korean is spoken by 77 million people as their first language and an additional 54 million as a second language. Korean is the official language of South Korea and North Korea. It is also spoken as a second language in Japan and China. Korean is a tonal language, meaning the tones on words can vary greatly (a high tone vs. a low tone). Here are some examples of words with more than one different tone:To practice pronunciation, I use the Babbel app which has plenty of audio-files for me to listen & repeat. You can download it from Google Play or Apple App Store. It is available for free and contains over 2000 different audio files and covers all four tones (Hangul, General, Classical and Modern Korean). There are many resources available for learning the language free of charge. The following list consists of some popular resources: 1. Yabla: This website offers thousands of videos and audios in various languages, including Korean. Users can choose from a variety of courses and levels, but they will have to register in order to be able to watch the videos. Some courses are available in English while others are only in Korean. It is recommended that you have basic knowledge of Korean before you start using Yabla, although there are basic level courses offered for beginners as well under the "Beginner" section. 2. KoreanClass101: This site provides several free podcasts which include basic grammar explanations and conversations by native speakers. It has audio files, transcripts, exercises and even flash cards for extra practice. 3. KBS1: This website offers many different resources for learning the language. The most popular are the podcasts which are available in various levels. There are also videos, grammar tips and tests ready for you to try out. Registration is free but is required in order to access all the materials. These sites offer no or very little cost alternatives for learning Korean on your own time through various online resources. I will be adding more resources to this list in the future so stay tuned!
