Life of Pi is a story of adventure but it is also profoundly spiritual. It takes the reader on an emotional journey, immersing them in different worlds and drawing them into its narrator’s life. The novel reflects Yann Martel's deep understanding of the human condition which has produced a wonderfully complex, fully realized character at its centre: namely, Pi Patel. The book starts with his first-person account as an adult looking back on his extraordinary experiences. This provides the context for Pi's childhood, adolescence and journey to freedom at the end of his term as a sort of zoo animal. In this section Martel presents the life of Pi from birth to maturity, describing its major influences on his personality and behaviour. In order to present this story Martel has used a variety of narrative techniques. Throughout the novel Pi appears as a rationalist omniscient narrator, which creates a highly credible reality in relation to what is going on around him. Pi's journey begins quickly – the reader is taken from an adult man going back through his younger years, growing up in Pondicherry with his family as they prepare to move out into their own place. Here the young Pi is introduced to religion and education. He learns to read and write, while also attending a Hindu school, which are all influences that take shape in his adulthood. The family takes a trip to the Middle East where his father opens a zoo, helping him immensely when it comes to providing for himself later on in life. Martel uses Piscine Molitor Patel's full name, Pi Patel, at various points in the novel for effect. At the beginning of the novel, he is named Piscine Molitor Patel. Pi's father explains that Piscine means "from the pool" and Molitor that "he who swims". It is a name that defines Pi from the beginning. Later, when Pi becomes a notable zookeeper, he adopts his new full name from before as his last name. Martel uses this technique to show how many people have their names changed to something else as they grow older or live different lives. Martel provides the novel with a framing narrative. Pi is telling his story to an American writer who wants to learn about his journey. Through the use of this framing narrative, Martel guides the reader through Pi's life story without allowing them to feel lost in time or out of touch with what is going on. He provides some sense of comfort for the reader, which is necessary because of the difficult things that happen throughout this adventure. Martel also uses this narrative technique in order to create distance between Pi and the writer. This is important because it allows for more intimate details to be shared while still maintaining some level of privacy between Pi and another person. cfa1e77820
